Children's Lifestyles and the Obesity Epidemic (CLOE)

Hillevi Prell and Christina Berg

In this project, Hillevi Prell and Christina Berg investigate food advertising on television aimed at children. The project is part of the research programme Children's lifestyle and the Obesity Epidemic (CLOE) with principal investigator Professor Lauren Lissner at the Department of Public Health and Community Medicine. Other collaborators in the research program are the Department of Pediatrics and the Center for Consumer Science (CFK) at the University of Gothenburg. The research project started in 2007 and will continue until 2013.

In the study Television Food Advertising to Children: a Global Perspective, the existence and content of food advertising to children in a number of countries in the world were examined. The purpose of this study was to compare the nature and extent of television food advertising to children in 11 countries around the world. Thirteen research groups in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom and the United States recorded all that was broadcast between 6 am and 22 during two weekdays and two weekend days in the three most popular commercial channels among children younger than 13 years. In Sweden, it was TV3, TV4 and Channel 5, which were investigated. In the latter television data we also qualitatively analyzed the health messages set out in the commercials.
